An Essential Guide to Making a DIY Weed Pipe

An Essential Guide to Making a DIY Weed Pipe

Whether you're looking to save on money or just want to flaunt your creativity, making a DIY weed pipe can be a fun and exciting project. Luckily, despite the plethora of weed pipe varieties out there, you can whip up a DIY one using various household items.

In this article, we’ll teach you how to make different DIY pipes and how to use them. But before we delve into the process, let’s first discuss what a weed pipe is.

How to make a DIY weed pipe

Apple Weed Pipe

An apple is perhaps the most iconic DIY weed pipe method. It's easy and fun to make; not to mention it laces your cannabis smoke with a sweet, zesty apple flavor.

Materials

  • 1 ripe apple
  • Knife, screwdriver, car keys, or any tool you can use to poke a hole

How to make it

  1. Take your ripe apple and twist off the stem to create a natural bowl on top of the apple.
  2. Using a knife, screwdriver, car keys (or whatever you got), poke a hole at the top where the stem was and press it to the center.
  3. Poke a hole in the side of the apple, which will act as your mouthpiece. Connect the hole to the first vertical hole you made to form an L-shaped tunnel. If you want a carb, push the mouthpiece all the way through to the other side.
  4. Fill the top with dry, ground cannabis, and enjoy your hits.

If you don't have access to an apple, you can use other fruits and vegetables as alternatives. They include:

  • Potatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Carrots
  • Zucchini; or
  • Anything that can allow you to make an L-shaped air tunnel

The Tic-Tac Bong

A Tic-Tac bong is technically a water pipe. This portable homemade pipe is simple and fun to make. The only material you need is an empty Tic-Tac box.

How to make it

  1. Poke a hole on one side about halfway up the box and insert a thin hollow tube (such as a straw) until the end inside the empty box touches the bottom. For a grommet, use modeling clay or a rubber washer.
  2. Make a cone-shaped bowl by molding a piece of aluminum foil and place it on the straw's opening that's sticking outside the box.
  3. Fill the box with water and pack ground cannabis into the bowl. Light up the cannabis and inhale through the opening on top of the box. The smoke will go through the water, producing bubbles while you inhale. This action provides an enjoyable experience as the water filters and cools down the smoke.

Pen Pipe

If you don't have any fruit/vegetables or a Tic-Tac container, you can use a pen to make a weed pipe. Although using a pen is a little convoluted compared to other DIY methods, it's quite discreet.

How to make it

  1. Find a pen that you can easily disassemble, preferably one that doesn't have a plastic top.
  2. Take out the ink tube so that you only have the pen cone
  3. Take the nib and place it backwards – in the opposite direction. The nib should create a V- or cone-shaped bowl.
  4. Fill the bowl with cannabis, light it up, and inhale using the open end of the tube as your mouthpiece.

The steamroller

Though usually made from glass, you can make a DIY version using materials like a paper towel roll — yep, a paper towel roll.

Materials

  • A paper towel or toilet paper roll
  • Aluminum foil
  • Scissors
  • Pin or needle

How to make it

  1. Cut out a round hole on the side and create a makeshift bowl in the hole using aluminum foil.
  2. Use the pin or needle to poke small holes in the foil for airflow.
  3. Put your herb into the bowl.
  4. Make a makeshift carb hole by placing your hand over the end closest to your bowl. Light the bowl and hit it.

A metal pipe

You can make a DIY metal pipe using an actual metal pipe, which you find in hardware stores. While we don’t recommend it for long-term use, it’s a good DIY option for a quick fix.

Materials

  • A small piece of metal tubing or a section of a metal pen casing
  • A larger metal nut or screen that fits snugly in one end of the tubing
  • Aluminum foil

How to make it

  1. Go to the hardware store and look for a metal pipe and metal nut that fits your needs and preferences.
  2. Insert the metal nut or screen into one end of the tubing to act as a bowl. Place a foil makeshift bowl.
  3. Check for any sharp edges that could cut you and dull those out before smoking.
  4. Pack your ground cannabis into the nut or screen, light it, and inhale from the opposite end of the tube.

A soda can pipe

A soda can pipe is a classic DIY method when you're in a pinch. However, we don’t recommend long-term use due to health concerns with inhaling aluminum.

Materials

  • Soda can
  • Screwdriver or knife, for making bigger holes
  • Needle
  • Aluminum foil

How to make it

  1. Rinse out an empty soda can and let it dry.
  2. Create a small dent on one side of the can for your bowl by pressing it with your fingers so it’s more bowl-shaped.
  3. Using a pin or needle, poke several holes in the dent to allow for airflow. This is your makeshift bowl.
  4. On the side of the can, near the bowl, make a bigger hole. This will be your carb hole.
  5. Remove the metal tab near the drinking hole to prevent any cuts.
  6. Place your cannabis on the dented area, light it, and inhale from the can's opening, covering the carb with your thumb as needed.

A candy pipe

A creative way to smoke weed, you can use hard candy to mold a fun and flavorful pipe that's perfect for a quick session.

Materials

  • Soft candies (like Starburst or lifesavers)
  • Toothpicks (for support)
  • Oven-safe materials for shaping

How to make it

  1. Mold the candy into a long, pipe-like shape. Make a tunnel in the middle of the stack of candy.
  2. Then, stack the candy and form it into a bowl-like shape. You can use toothpicks for support. Poke holes into the bowl for air to pass through.
  3. At the end nearest to the bowl, mold a mouthpiece and create a hole through it that connects to the main pipe.
  4. Put herb into your bowl, light it up, and enjoy the sweet taste of candy-weed.

Watermelon bong

A watermelon bong brings a refreshing twist to your smoking experience, perfect for summer parties or a fun DIY project.

Materials

  • 1 large watermelon
  • 1 carrot
  • Knife
  • Screwdriver or drill

How to make it

  1. Using a screwdriver or drill, make three holes in your watermelon: one near the top for the mouthpiece and an opposite hole for the bowl. The third hole is your carb hole, which should be placed somewhere accessible to your hand.
  2. Using a knife or screwdriver, create an air pocket near the top of the watermelon by scooping out the juice and flesh.
  3. Add a bit of water to the air pocket to serve as bong water for filtering smoke.
  4. Check the airflow by inhaling into the mouthpiece and using the carb hole.
  5. Take the carrot and carve out a bowl on its side. Drill a hole through the top until it meets the bowl. Check for airflow by blowing into the end.
  6. Stick the carrot into the watermelon with the narrow tip first. Twist it back and forth for a snug fit.
  7. Pack your carrot bowl, light it up, and enjoy.

Pumpkin bong

A pumpkin bong is a fun and festive way to enjoy cannabis while celebrating Halloween or Thanksgiving.

Materials

  • 1 medium-sized pumpkin
  • Knife
  • Spoon
  • Tubes or downstems

How to make it

  1. Cut the top off the pumpkin and use a spoon to scoop out the seeds and guts.
  2. Carve two holes opposite each other through the pumpkin. One is for your bowl, and the other for your mouthpiece.
  3. Add the straws or tubes into those holes, ensuring those dip into the emptied pumpkin chamber (approximately 45 degrees).
  4. Fill the pumpkin with water to filter the smoke.
  5. Pack your bowl with weed, light, and inhale through the makeshift mouthpiece.

Gravity bong

The gravity bong uses water pressure to give you a powerful hit. It's surprisingly easy to make with household items.

Materials

  • A larger container or bucket filled with water
  • Knife or boxcutter
  • Pin or needle
  • A smaller plastic bottle
  • Aluminum foil

How to make it

  1. Cut the bottom off the smaller plastic bottle.
  2. Cut the top off the larger plastic bottle and fill it with water. If you’re using a bucket, just fill it with water.
  3. Using a knife or boxcutter, create a hole through the bottle cap of the smaller bottle.
  4. Wrap the cap in aluminum foil and shape it so that there’s a small indent where the bowl can be. Poke holes through the foil.
  5. Submerge the smaller bottle in the water with the cap removed, then screw the cap with the loaded bowl back on.
  6. Light the cannabis and slowly lift the bottle, filling it with smoke.
  7. Unscrew the cap, put your mouth over the bottle's opening, and push down to inhale the smoke.

Water bottle bong

A water bottle bong is a classic DIY alternative for those who prefer water filtration without the expense of a traditional bong.

Materials

  • A plastic water bottle
  • Aluminum foil
  • Pin or needle

How to make it

  1. Clean your water bottle and remove the cap.
  2. Make a hole about halfway up the bottle to act as the carb hole.
  3. Fill the bottle with water, leaving about 2 inches from the top empty.
  4. Form a bowl from aluminum foil and secure it over the bottle's opening. Poke small holes in the foil for airflow.
  5. Make another hole on the side, but make it bigger. This will be your mouthpiece.
  6. Place your cannabis in the foil bowl, light it, and inhale from the bigger side hole while holding and then releasing the carb to draw smoke.

Things to Avoid When Making a DIY Weed Pipe

It's essential to know the elements and practices you should avoid when making a homemade weed pipe. The following are some of the items to avoid or materials you need to use carefully when making a do-it-yourself weed pipe:

  • Plastic bowls – You mustn't use plastic bowls; this is crucial because plastic is not a heat-resistant material and it will melt when heated. When this occurs, plastic releases toxic fumes that can harm your respiratory tract. You can use a plastic material for the neck/stem, but for the bowl, it would be best to use a metal or any other non-plastic material.
  • Choose food items carefully – While fruit and vegetables are some of the easily available food items for making a homemade pipe, you should carefully choose them. Ensure that the fruit or vegetable you use is not rotten, wrinkled, or mushy. What you need is a sturdy and ripe body. Clumsy or mushy food items will collapse and make the entire procedure uncomfortable and unsuccessful.
  • Screening material – Screens are used to keep the cannabis in the bowl where it can burn wholly. They also keep ash and unwanted gunk from entering your smoke, preventing these by-products from ruining your smoking experience or burning your mouth or throat. Therefore, ensure you also use a screen with the weed pipe you make. Some great options include metal, glass, or titanium. Many DIYers use aluminum, and while it's the most easily accessible material at home, it's not the safest option to use.

What is a Weed Pipe?

A weed pipe is a small, simple, handheld device used for smoking cannabis products. It features a bowl-shaped component on one end, where users place ground cannabis flowers, light them, and smoke. In between the bowl and the mouthpiece is the neck (also known as a stem or chamber) through which users inhale the smoke into the lungs. A pipe also features a carb – a small hole on the side, usually by the bowl – that users cover and uncover regularly to regulate airflow during inhalation.

Types of Pipes

There's a wide range of pipes, and they come in different sizes, shapes, colors, and designs (some even crafted with inspiration from literature and films). The common ones include:

  • Hand pipes – Also referred to as "spoons," hand pipes sit in the palm of your hand, and as explained above, you place the cannabis flower in the bowl, light it, and smoke it from the mouthpiece through the neck. Most hand pipes are made of glass, although you won't be hard-pressed to find ceramic, wooden, or metallic options.

  • One-hitters – Also called chillums, one-hitters are small smoking devices, measuring 2-4 inches or 5-10 inches long and shaped like a tube with a mouthpiece on one end and a small opening on the other end, where users place their cannabis flower. As their name suggests, they only hold enough cannabis for one hit.

  • Steamrollers – A steamroller combines characteristics from a hand pipe and a one-hitter. It is cylindrical like a one-hitter but borrows specific features – such as a larger bowl and a carb – from a hand pipe. The differentiating factor between a steamroller and a hand pipe is the open area of the steamroller, which facilitates greater airflow.
  • Pop-culture-inspired pipes – Other types of pipes derive their characteristics from films and literature. Examples include the Sherlock pipe, which is inspired by the fictional detective "Sherlock Holmes" and characterized by a long-curved shape, and the Gandalf pipe (associated with the wizard Gandalf from the "Lord of the Rings" movie series). It looks like the Sherlock pipe, except it's significantly longer.

How to Use a Weed Pipe

Using a pipe is a straightforward means of smoking cannabis. The following are steps for smoking weed using a pipe.

  1. Take a small amount of cannabis flower and grind it using your hands or a grinder
  2. Pack the cannabis into the pipe's bowl. Don't overpack the bowl, because packing it too tightly limits airflow, making it difficult to smoke.
  3. Hold the pipe in your palm and place your thumb over the carb on the side of the bowl. If you're using a one-hitter, you don't have to worry about that as there's no carb to cover.
  4. Spark your lighter close to the bowl's surface whilst covering the card with your thumb. That draws the flame to the bowl, heating the cannabis and creating the smoke to inhale through the neck.
  5. Once the cannabis starts to combust and cherry, remove the flame from the bowl. You can keep the cherry burning by covering and uncovering the carb with a tapping motion as you inhale.
  6. Exhale and repeat the procedure until you've smoked all the cannabis to get "high" you want

Summary

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I smoke a pipe with no carb?

Smoking weed from a pipe with no carb is not entirely different from smoking from a pipe with a carb. The only dissimilarity is that a carbless pipe requires a slightly harder pull to draw the smoke through the stem. When using a pipe with no carb, you should also expect to lose smoke that dissipates from the bowl as the cherry burns.

What's the difference between a piece, bowl, and pipe?

A "piece" is a collective term used to describe a pipe or any other crafted smoking device. A bowl is the opening on one end of a pipe where a cannabis flower is placed, although the term is commonly used synonymously with pipe to describe the whole piece.

How much is a weed pipe?

A weed pipe typically costs $20-$35, depending on the brand, pipe material, and other factors. Still, it's not uncommon to find other elaborate and custom pieces going for $100 or more.
