You realize your vape coil needs replacing, but there is still half a tank of e-liquid left. Dumping it feels wasteful, especially if the juice is expensive or you have just refilled the tank.

The good news is that you can often change a vape coil without emptying the tank first. The exact process depends on the design of your device, though. Some tanks can be turned upside down so the liquid moves away from the coil.

Others have automatic juice-flow controls specifically designed for mid-tank coil changes. A few devices simply cannot be opened with liquid inside without making a mess.

Before you start unscrewing anything, take a minute to identify what kind of tank or pod you have.

Can You Change a Vape Coil Without Emptying the Tank?

In many cases, yes. You can change the coil while there is still juice in the tank if:

2. Close the airflow

3. Check the juice level

Look at how much e-liquid is left in the tank. You need enough empty space for the juice to move away from the coil and chimney when the tank is turned upside down.

If the tank is completely full, inverting it may send e-liquid into the chimney or mouthpiece. In that situation, it is usually better to vape the liquid down further or transfer some of it into a clean container.

4. Turn the tank upside down

Place a paper towel over the mouthpiece and turn the tank upside down. Keep it vertical rather than holding it at an angle.

Wait a few seconds for the e-liquid to settle near the top of the tank, which is now facing downward. Watch the juice through the glass. It should move away from the base and the coil opening.

5. Remove the tank’s base

While continuing to hold the tank upside down, slowly unscrew the bottom hardware.

Do this over a paper towel. A few drops of condensation or e-liquid may come out even if the tank itself does not drain.

If you feel resistance, stop and check the manual. You may be twisting the wrong part or attempting to open a tank that uses a different coil-access system.

6. Remove the old coil

Depending on the tank, the coil will either:

• Unscrew from the tank’s base

• Pull straight out of the tank

The goal is to moisten the cotton, not flood the center of the coil. Avoid pouring juice directly through the open center chimney.

Priming gives the liquid a head start on saturating the wick. Firing a coil while its cotton is still dry can scorch the wick and produce a burnt taste that may not go away.

9. Install the new coil

Push or screw the replacement coil into place, depending on your tank.

A push-fit coil should sit flush with the surrounding hardware. Some coils have a flat edge or keyed shape that must line up with the tank before the coil will slide in completely.

If you have a screw-in coil, start the threads gently. Do not force the coil if it feels crooked. Cross-threading can damage the coil or prevent the tank from sealing.

10. Reattach the base

Keeping the tank upside down, screw or press the base back into position. Make sure it is secure, but do not overtighten it.

O-rings create the seal, so extreme force should not be necessary. Overtightening can damage the seals or make the tank difficult to open later.

11. Return the tank to an upright position

Once the base is firmly attached, turn the tank upright. Open the airflow and inspect the bottom of the tank for leaks.

Wipe away any liquid from the outside before reconnecting the tank to the mod.

12. Let the new coil soak

Even if you manually primed the coil, allow it to sit in the filled tank for at least five to 10 minutes. This gives the e-liquid time to saturate the inner wick.

Some brands similarly recommend priming the visible cotton, filling the tank and waiting before using a newly installed coil.

13. Start at a lower wattage

Check the recommended wattage range printed on the coil. Begin near the bottom of that range and gradually increase the power until the vapor and flavor feel right.

Do not immediately fire the coil at the maximum listed wattage. Starting low reduces the chance of burning a wick that has not completely saturated.

How to Change a Push-Fit Coil With Juice in a Pod

Some pod systems have removable coils that plug into the bottom of the pod. The process is similar, but these pods are often more likely to leak when the coil is removed.

First, remove the pod from the battery. Check where the e-liquid sits when the pod is turned upside down. If the liquid moves away from the coil opening, hold the pod inverted and pull out the old coil.

Prime the replacement coil, align it correctly and push it firmly into the pod. It should sit completely flush with the base.

If the pod is full and the coil opening remains covered by liquid, do not pull out the coil. The contents of the pod may drain through the opening. Vape the liquid level down or transfer it first.

Some pod systems do not have replaceable coils at all. If the coil is permanently built into the pod, you must replace the entire pod rather than attempting to pull it apart.

What If the Tank Is Too Full?

A completely full tank leaves little room for the e-liquid to move when you turn it upside down. If the juice continues to cover the coil opening, you have three choices.

Vape the level down

Do not keep vaping a coil that tastes severely burnt just to save the juice. Once the cotton is scorched, continued use will not repair it.

Transfer the liquid

Use a clean, blunt-tip syringe or e-liquid transfer tool to remove some of the juice through the tank’s fill port. Put it into a clean, labeled container if you intend to reuse it.

Do not return liquid to its original bottle if it has been sitting in a used tank. It may carry residue from the old coil and contaminate the rest of the bottle.

Why Did the Tank Leak After the Coil Change?

A small amount of leaking immediately after a coil replacement is fairly common. A steady leak is not.

• The coil is not inserted completely

• A screw-in coil is loose or cross-threaded

• An O-ring was pinched or displaced

• The base is not attached evenly

• Too much e-liquid was added while priming

• Juice entered the central chimney

• The tank was left open too long
